Coaching: A Promising Tool for Mental Health Support

It’s important now more than ever to prioritise mental health support. Mental Health Coaching offers a promising tool to help individuals cope with the crisis. Let’s explore how coaching can help you take charge of your mental health:
    1. Personalised support – mental health challenges are unique for each individual. Coaching offers a personalised support system that works on an individual level. Coaches validate their client’s feelings and emotions, and help them identify their strengths and vulnerabilities. It’s not about offering a one size fits all solution, but more about understanding the unique challenges and creating individualised solutions to address them. It’s why I have various branches to my coaching which may or may not intersect. For example, I’m a trauma informed coach – for the times when I need an understanding of a person’s adverse life experiences. I’m a positive psychology coach– for the ‘next-step’ thinking, thriving over surviving needs. I’m also a person of colour living in the West, with a sociological and psychological background, meaning my awareness of cultural sensitivities makes me equipped to support those from diverse backgrounds. I also do neurodiversity coaching – practical tips and solutions to support neurodivergency in the workplace. And my extensive teaching and training background, means that I can work with a vast range of people, remember- mental health doesn’t discriminate.
    2. Goal-orientated approach – this is especially beneficial when dealing with any aspect of mental health. Coaches help clients identify achievable goals and partner with the client to create effective action plans. Additionally, coaches help clients stay accountable to themselves and their goals. This can help individuals develop a sense of accomplishment and build confidence.
    3. A Safe Space to Talk – mental health coaches are experts in creating a non-judgmental, supportive environment for clients. They encourage clients to express their feelings and emotions without the anxiety of criticism, judgement, or blame. This safe space can be instrumental in developing trust, communication, and self-awareness.
    4. Skills and strategies – coaches work with clients to develop essential skills and strategies to manage their mental health. They explore techniques such as mindfulness, breathing exercises, physical activity, or in my particular case – positive psychology interventions. This can be a range of things from journalling, to being in nature, to even using cameras! Coaches also provide support and guidance to clients to implement these techniques, promoting resilience and improving their overall wellbeing.
Coaching is an invaluable resource for everyone, regardless of their mental health status. If you’re struggling with mental health issues, consider reaching out to a counsellor, or medical professional, or a coach. But importantly, check what they are licensed and insured for, and see if you vibe. If you don’t, any good coach will be happy to let you know that the match isn’t right, and may even help find you a better fit! #mentalhealthawarenessweek #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthcoaching #youarenotalone #coaching
